SRT translation overview

SubRip is a subtitle file format used with editors, media players and streaming platforms, including subtitles downloaded from YouTube. qlot translates each .srt file as a separate document while keeping cue numbers and comma timestamps exactly as written. Upload the subtitle file rather than the video or audio.

Dialogue, narration, lyrics, bracketed sound descriptions and speaker names in subtitle text are translated. qlot reads a sample of the file to keep names and levels of politeness consistent, then translates with neighboring cues in view. Each cue retains its own text and timing, and glossaries let you specify recurring terms.

Translate into several target languages at once and receive a separate file for each language. qlot retains the uploaded filename and extension and checks the result against the original cues and timestamps before delivery. A failed structural check or too many untranslated cues stops the job with nothing charged. On PRO and TEAM, a translation quality report is available from the dashboard.

Original timing preserved

Cue timestamps, numbers and order stay exactly as written, without retiming or changing cue duration.

Context across cues

A file sample and neighboring cues guide names, politeness and sentences that continue across subtitles.

Several target languages

Choose from more than 200 source and target languages, translate into several languages at once and apply glossaries.

Subtitle file upload

Upload an .srt file up to 12MB and up to 1 million lines on a paid plan.

Language-aware line layout

Single-speaker subtitles use one or two balanced lines where possible, without shortening or truncating the translation.

Text-only credit calculation

Credits are quoted for subtitle text before translation, excluding timing and markup and counting repeated cue text once.

What stays intact

Timestamps and cue numbersEvery timing line, including position coordinates, and the number and order of cues stay exactly as written. Missing, repeated or out-of-order cue numbers are accepted without renumbering. Blank lines, line endings and text outside cues remain unchanged.
Formatting inside a lineItalic, bold, underline and color tags are restored around translated words. If their placement cannot be preserved, the cue text is delivered without its inner tags; whole-line tags remain. Lines with word-by-word timing are delivered without inner timing or formatting tags.
Speakers, sounds and position codesDialogue, lyrics, bracketed sound descriptions and speaker names in the text are translated. Speaker dashes, double-chevron speaker marks, music notes and position codes remain unchanged. Two speakers keep separate lines, with no further splitting of either line.
Line layoutSingle-speaker cues use one line when the translation fits, otherwise two balanced lines, breaking after punctuation where possible. Lines are kept within 42 display columns for most languages, 16 full-width characters for Korean and Chinese, 13 for Japanese and 35 characters for Thai wherever the translation allows; a full-width character counts as two display columns. Longer translations may exceed the limit on two lines rather than being shortened or truncated. A cue gets no more than two lines unless the original had more. Korean, Japanese and Chinese cues end without a full stop.
Rolling and automatic captionsRepeated lines in rolling captions are translated consistently, line by line, and each stays one line. Word-by-word timing tags and any formatting inside those lines are removed, while cue timestamps remain unchanged.
Encoding and byte-order markEncoding is detected automatically: UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32 retain their encoding and byte-order mark; legacy encodings become UTF-8, with a byte-order mark for Windows code pages such as CP949, Shift-JIS, GBK, Big5 and Windows-1252, and without one for other legacy encodings such as EUC-JP and ISO-8859.
Limits and refusalsFiles up to 12MB and up to 1 million lines are accepted. Empty or oversized files, binary data, undetectable encodings, files with no subtitle cues or no translatable text, and subtitle text that does not appear to match the selected source language are declined before any charge; an .srt extension alone does not make a file a subtitle file.

01Will an SRT translator keep my timestamps and cue numbers?

qlot preserves each timing line, cue number and the number and order of cues exactly as written. Missing, repeated or out-of-order numbers are accepted. Timing, duration and playback speed are not adjusted, and cues are not merged or split.

Before delivery, the translation is checked against the original cues, timestamps and line placement. If that check fails or too many cues come back untranslated, the job fails and nothing is charged.

02What happens to formatting and sound descriptions when I translate subtitles?

Dialogue, narration, lyrics, bracketed sound descriptions and speaker names in the subtitle text are translated. Speaker marks, music notes, position codes and tags around a whole line stay as written. Inner italic, bold, underline and color tags are restored when possible; if they cannot be placed correctly, that cue is delivered without its inner tags. Lines with word-by-word timing lose those timing and inner formatting tags.

In a dual-language input file, lines written in a different script from the selected source language stay unchanged and are not billed. Cues containing only numbers or symbols and text outside the cues also stay unchanged and are not billed. Translation does not create a new bilingual subtitle file.

03Can I translate SRT files from automatic or live captions?

Yes. Upload the subtitle file exported from your caption workflow. Repeated lines in rolling captions are recognized and translated line by line, so the same line reads the same wherever it reappears, and each line remains one line.

Lines containing word-by-word timing are translated as plain text: cue timing stays, but word timing and inner formatting tags do not. This page accepts subtitle files, not video or audio, and does not transcribe speech or generate captions.

04How is SRT translation billed, and which languages can I choose?

Credits are measured before translation on the subtitle text selected for translation. Timestamps, cue numbers and tags are excluded; repeated cue text is counted once, and in rolling captions a repeated line is counted once. A completed job is charged its quoted price, including the few cues that may remain in the source language. The pricing page’s credit guide can measure your file before translation.

More than 200 source and target languages are available. You can translate one file into several target languages at once and apply glossaries. Each target language is delivered in a separate file.

05Can I translate an SRT file on the Preview plan?

SRT subtitle translation requires a paid plan. The Preview plan does not support subtitles because previews are page images and a subtitle file has no pages. Files can be up to 12MB and up to 1 million lines.
